It was a slow start to the new year, as we found ourselves snowed in, with hazardous road conditions causing rehearsals and engagements to be cancelled and delaying our first meeting until around the middle of January.
Our Annual Concert took place on Saturday, March 27th to a filled-to-capacity Old Mill Hall, Grove, when our guests were ‘Fantasia’, a young group of talented singers under the direction of Sheenagh Dernie, from Wantage. The enthusiastic audience included Patrick O’Leary, the Town Mayor, Julia Reynolds, the chairman of this year’s Wantage Summer Festival and Ed. Vaizey, our local MP.
In mid-May we visited Pontypool for a concert with 'MelloD' a small group of lovely Welsh ladies who were our guests at our Annual Concert last year. We were probably a little anxious at performing in the 'Land of Song' but the warm hospitality of our hosts soon eased any such worries and we were able to relax and enjoy performing to a full hall on what became a memorable occasion.
A busy last weekend in June saw us performing on the Saturday in a charity concert at Trinity Church, Abingdon, for Christian Aid, with Abingdon Ladies Choir and the local primary school choir and again on the Sunday in a concert for the Wantage Summer Festival at St John Vianney Church, Wantage, with the Wantage Orchestra.
On the social side, our chairman hosted a summer BBQ and our annual golf challenge took place in July with another new name engraved on the trophy. Also much enjoyed was the golden wedding celebration of our Treasurer, Geoff and wife Jean.
August is our quiet period, with members enjoying holidays, etc. During the month we were pleased to find ourselves as one of the three local causes in Wantage Waitrose's Community Matters campaign and delighted with the support of the people of Wantage and surrounding districts which resulted in the month's sponsorship of £1000 being divided almost equally between ourselves and the two other local organisations. We returned refreshed near the end of the month for a wedding engagement in Ardington Village.
The busy Christmas season included the Mayor's Carol Concert in Wantage Church, raising funds for local charities, and a concert at St. Mary Magdalene Church, in the village of Shippon, near Abingdon.
